The number of school shootings with casualties in the United States hit a new record in the 2021-2022 school year and more than doubled from the previous school year. National Center for Education Statistics
The report defines a school shooting as an incident where a gun is wielded, fired, or a
bullet hits school property for any reason, regardless of victims, time of day, or day of the
week.
There were 188 school shootings with casualties reported in the 2021-2022 school year at public and private elementary and secondary schools.
According to the report, the most commonly known situations associated with such
incidents included "escalation of dispute," "drive-by," "accidental firing of a weapon,"
and intentional property damage."
Approximately a third of the school shootings during this time had an unknown situation.
Nearly 98% of the shooters at elementary and secondary schools between 2000 and 2021
were males.
